Personal Experience

My Wild Ride to Becoming Your Go-To Guide

From the quaint corners of Sauerland to the vibrant streets of San Francisco, my journey has been anything but ordinary.

I’ve navigated cultures, industries, and continents, fueled by a relentless curiosity and a love for change. Whether it was jumping headfirst into the luxury hotel industry with zero experience or crossing the United States in a beat-up car, every twist and turn taught me something new.

I’ve embraced every opportunity, no matter how daunting, and now I’m here to help you do the same.

Been There, Done That, Got the Battle Scars and Evolved

Over four decades, I’ve dived headfirst into more than just one new adventure—and I’ve got the scars to prove it. Whether it was thrusting myself into the male-dominated world of air freight logistics or transitioning from corporate life to entrepreneurship, I’ve faced challenges that tested my limits – and succeeded.

These experiences didn’t just leave me with stories; they forged resilience, adaptability, and a deep understanding of transformation. Now, I’m channeling all of that hard-earned wisdom into helping you navigate your own journey.

Evolving from Typewriters to Tech Magic

From juggling mechanical typewriters, stenography, and index cards to helping an IT expert hook up an entire organization to a brand-new system—my early career was a whirlwind of tech evolution.

From configuring screens on DBase in San Francisco to watching the world shrink with the rise of the internet, I’ve seen it all.

Letters became faxes, then emails, and now messages. Today, I’m diving deep into AI—not to replace humans, but to liberate them from mediocre tasks and free them to focus on important tasks.

All evolutionary steps had one thing in common though: the anxiety about loosing something. My learning through all those decades:

You can’t stop evolution – neither the biological one than the technical one. Face it, learn, adapt, thrive.

Technical Evolution: Several generations of cell phones, a mechanical typwriter, calculator, flopyy discs, laptop. Background AI

My leadership roles in further education, logistics, and with an NGO have equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of diverse industries and different cultures, enabling me to effectively address varied client needs.

At Common Purpose, I took the reins as Program Director, crafting and delivering a leadership program that built bridges across sectors—private, public, NGO, you name it. My mission? To blend civic responsibility with forward-thinking leadership, making diverse networking and collaboration across industries and sectors bridging the gap between economics, public services, culture, and societal impact.

As Department Head at HDT Essen, Haus der Technik Essen, a then-external institute of RWTH Aachen University, I drove initiatives carefully designed to match each individual client’s needs that unlocked human potential and propelled organizational growth.

As Sales Executive and Route Manager US West Coast and Canada  at Overbruck Air- and Seafreight, I mastered the strategic sales game and succeeded in men’s world back in the 90’s.

As Leadership Coach I have been successfully supporting countless business leaders in change situations since 2002. I am certified Systemic Business Coach (ICA).

Since 2004, as a Facilitator, I have been creating space and structure for small and large groups so that they can find their own creative solutions, a common goal or a common path.

As an AI Consultant, I can rely on my abilities to analyze and handle complex tasks, on analyzing and enhance workflows. Tools are developed with lightning speed, open possibilities, none of us was ever dreaming of. My mission here: harness AI to enable leaders and their teams to focus overcoming challenges, finding innovative solutions and thrive.

I lead by example, embodying courage, adaptability, and continuous learning. My life is a testament to these principles, from early adventures to professional challenges.

Key Experiences and Challenges: The Journey That Shaped My Success

From Exploration to Empowerment: Adventures that Built My Confidence

Growing up, our family encouraged curiosity and did things a little differently. We unearthed and analyzed fossils in the garden, built igloos for candlelit hot chocolate sessions, and navigated nighttime dinghy adventures on the Danish Limfjord. I learned to navigate both land and air, guiding our trips with a map in hand and logging our locations during balloon flights from age 12. Every weekend was an exploration—whether tracking tadpoles in the garden or visiting old towns, caves, and castles across Germany and the Netherlands, our adventures were all about understanding the world around us.

Saddling Up for Life: How Horses Taught Me Responsibility

At 12, I learned to ride; by 14, I had my first foster horse, which meant freedom—and a lot of responsibility. I was at the stables every day, caring for “my” horse, assisting the farrier, and even helping the vet. I took on tasks at the riding club, from teaching kids to fixing fences, all while embracing the joy of doing what I loved.

The Computer That Changed Everything: My Early Tech Adventure

Amidst the usual school drudgery, a surprising highlight emerged: a big, blue computer donated by a company. This beast of a machine, with a whopping 64 KB of power, needed its own room and air conditioning. Despite my usual math woes, I joined the computer science club out of sheer curiosity. I loved every minute of it—writing programs in BASIC and communicating via punched tape. It wasn’t just fun; it changed the way I approached problem-solving, laying the groundwork for my love of digitization.

Two Suitcases, One Dream: How I Hit the Reset Button on Life

My world felt like a bubble, keeping me from real life—trapped in a boring job with no room for growth or change. So, I decided to flip the script and take the leap! I ditched my secure gig as an industrial clerk, gave up my cozy apartment, and said goodbye to Germany. Armed with nothing but two suitcases and a dream, I headed to the USA with no plan other than to hit the reset button on my life. Adventure, here I come!

Risking It All: A Journey Across A Continent to Fulfill My Dream

Landing in Virginia kicked off a long, grueling quest for a work permit, but the real adventure was the solo road trip across the continent in my trusty old clunker, ending in the hilly streets of San Francisco.

A new life, unexpected opportunities, and a childhood dream come true—I was finally living in the USA!

My first step into the world of client work began as a sales assistant at the exclusive 5-star Stanford Court Hotel on Nob Hill, which took me six interviews until I got in, bursting with excitement. Pure happiness!

Grounded by Life, getting Airborne Again

Aircargo - container being frontloaded into a Boeing 747Image: Boeing 747 getting front loaded

Gulf War, a recession, and a visa extension denied—talk about hitting a brick wall. I was forced back to Germany feeling powerless and defeated. But instead of giving up, I set my sights on two “must-haves”: living somewhere fun and working in a global environment that kept me on my toes. So, I landed a gig with an air freight forwarding company at Düsseldorf airport. Just like that, my life was airborne again, and the adventure was back on!

Taking the Lead: Blonde, Bold, and Breaking into the Men's World

Stepping into the freight world as a career changer and a blonde in a male-dominated industry was no small feat. But I took my top-notch service skills akquired in San Francisco and flipped the sales script: building trust, listening intently, and finding smart solutions with the team. Focussing the customer’s needs and teamwork became my secret weapons, turning rocky roads into a successful journey. And the best part? My business trips as a route manager took me back to my old stomping grounds on the US West Coast and Canada—talk about full circle.

Starting Strong in the Storm: My Post-9/11 Coaching Leap

ICA Logo - International Coaching Association, Certified Coach

In May 2001, I handed in my notice—self-employment was calling my name! After attending countless seminars (some great, others… not so much), I had a head full of ideas on how to do things better. With a generous leave of absence, I dove into a full-time training program that combined coaching and training. Traditional training? Not my piece of cake. But coaching? Now that sparked a new passion!

Needless to say this turned out to be quite a challenge: I started my business in the economic turmoils after 9/11. And yet – here I am!

World Café Magic: Where I Fell in Love with Facilitation

The moment I experienced a World Café, I was hooked on facilitation. It wasn’t just 1:1 coaching anymore— this was pure magic unleashed in large groups. It was bold, dynamic, and all about true collaboration. There’s nothing quite like the buzz of a room filled with people working together to generate ideas, define goals, and craft solutions in no time.

Open space formats like World Café, Barcamp, Future Conference, and RTSC Conference quickly became another passion—where facilitation meets fearless creativity.

BRINGING THE WORLD TOGETHER: GOING VIRTUAL

With Zoom and the ingenious breakout rooms, as well as Mural, Miro & Co. as virtual whiteboards, I can finally host my  beloved open space formats also virtually – and more effective than ever. Leaving participants stunned by what they achieved in a minimal amount of time doing the work and setting time slots free to socialize.

Groups become more international, travel times and costs are eliminated. The world is growing together. So are organizations with teams spread around the globe.

I am enthusiastic and updating my skills with training courses to become a certified blended learning designer and live online trainer.

In 2020, I was well prepared for the lockdown and able to spontaneously support many organizations in the transition from meeting and collaborate on site to virtual meetings and virtual collaboration.

What Drives Me: A Peek into my World

Birgit Gosejacob interviewed by Birgit Quirchmayr. Livestream Interview set-up

LIVING MY PASSION

After I rebooted my life in 1989 I swore to never ever tolerate a job that’s not making me happy. I kept to that. All the jobs that followed bore a challenge and a great environment to work in when I started. Things change, people develop and move on. So did I when I felt it was time – always after several years…

Today, I made my passion my business. Enjoying the impact I have. Enjoying to be able to support business leaders to thrive, enabling them to build environments to foster trust and collaboration and such impacting their teams as well.

I love being able to work from any place, not being bound to a certain location or a schedule other than one coordinated with a client.

BOLD EXPLORATION – UNSTOPPABLE CURIOSITY – UNBRIDLED ADVENTURE

I’m driven by the thrill of constant discovery, the joy of learning, and the magic of connecting with people from every walk of life. Whether it’s diving deep into an operational coal mine to fully understand my client’s challenges or bringing clients together from diverse industries to learn from each other, I live for those unexpected moments of insight.

My passion? Creating experiences where leaders face challenges in the most surprising places—whether that’s in a religious institution, a corporate boardroom, or even a jail.

Every adventure fuels growth, and every challenge sparks innovation.

Where do I recharge my batteries?

Outdoors!

I love gardening.

I love swimming in lakes and even more in the ocean.

I love being in the woods or on the beach.

Strong wind, great surf, a body board and I am happy.

My Teachers

I’m grateful for all those amazing coaches, trainers and mentors in my life – past and present who help me to develop and grow:

  • My parents who taught me to stand up for my values, to never quit being curious, adventurous and eager to learn something new.
  • Friends, who are always up for some serious brain juggling and lots of fun.
  • Bosses who believed in me, trusted me and gave me space to grow. All those people popping randomly in my life, offering a great lesson, insights or inspiration.
  • Last not least all those “ass angels” who made my life hell, giving me the final kick to get moving – into a new adventure, a new challenge, a new chapter of my life.
